Reportedly, Alberta Premier Smith will implement a permanent fuel tax program after the temporary program ends in June 2023.
Alberta’s Finance Minister said that once the temporary program ends, that beginning July 1, 2023, a permanent program will be implemented.
In a statement, Miniter Toews said:
“Starting Jan. 1, Alberta will be suspending the full provincial fuel tax for six months. This means that Albertans will save 13 cents per litre on gasoline and diesel from January to June.”
Adding, “Starting July 1, the program will return to the current system of providing fuel tax relief based on the price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) oil. This system will then remain in place permanently.”
“Since April of this year, when we first implemented the fuel tax relief program, Albertans have seen about $850 million in fuel tax savings.”
“The measure is just one of a number we’ve brought forward to help Albertans deal with the higher cost of living. It’s relief we’re able to provide thanks to our strong fiscal situation, which is helping us fulfil our commitment to make life more affordable.”
