Amidst a flurry of election promises, the Ontario Liberals announced they would make the newly developed COVID-19 vaccines mandatory for all public school children in Ontario in an attempt to “protect vulnerable kids and make classrooms safer”.
Studies consistently demonstrate that children and young people remain at low risk of COVID-19 mortality and severe outcomes. New data also shows that Omicron, the prevalent strain which is much weaker than the original COVID-19 virus, is even less dangerous to children.
“Under the Ontario Liberal plan, the COVID-19 vaccine will join nine other universal vaccines on the list of students’ required shots. Current exemptions under the Immunization of School Pupils Act will continue to apply”, the Ontario Liberal Party wrote in a press release.
According to a document published by the Public Health of Ontario in March 2022, “there have been very few reports of myocarditis/pericarditis in Ontario, Canada, and internationally following the administration of pediatric Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty, in children 5 -11 years of age. Similar to older age groups, there is a male predominance with most cases occurring after dose 2 in the 5-11 year olds.”
“Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle (myocardium). The inflammation can reduce the heart’s ability to pump and cause rapid or irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias). […] Sometimes myocarditis can result from a reaction to a drug or be part of a more general inflammatory condition. Signs and symptoms of myocarditis include chest pain, fatigue, shortness of breath, and rapid or irregular heartbeats. Severe myocarditis weakens the heart so that the rest of the body doesn’t get enough blood. Clots can form in the heart, leading to a stroke or heart attack”, according to the Mayo Clinic.
The Ontario Liberal’s proposition would effectively remove the parents’ choice to determine whether their children require a COVID-19 vaccine, which science does not seem to support unless there is an underlying, severe health condition.
