Just days ago, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Illinois Governor J.D. Pritzker welcomed a group of illegal migrants sent by Texas to Chicago and Cook County.
On September 4, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and the city announced a new website for Chicago residents to donate and volunteer for migrants being transported to Chicago from Texas.
However, WGN9 news has learned that many of those migrants have been moved out of the City of Chicago and even Cook County altogether and have been sent to suburbs like Burr Ridge in Du Page County.
The Mayor of Burr Ridge Gary Grasso told WGN that he is “concerned neither the village administrator nor I were told about this,” and that they “want to know: Why Burr Ridge?”
When the first bus load of illegal migrants arrived to Chicago, Mayor Lightfoot called out Texas Gov. Abbott for treating the illegal migrants like “cargo”.
Lightfoot added that “There could be a level of coordination and cooperation, but he chooses to do none of those things and instead tries to send human beings — not cargo, not freight — human beings across the country to an uncertain destination.”
However, it now appears that Mayor Lightfoot and Cook County officials have done a similar thing by sending the migrants to another part of Illinois outside of Chicago without coordination.
Chicago calls itself a “sanctuary city”, while Cook County also claims that as well. However, WGN reports that “the portion of Burr Ridge where many of the migrants are staying is actually in DuPage County.”
DuPage has reportedly “not taken a position on sanctuary cities.” The Mayor of Burr Ridge says he only learned of the migrants being sent to his area after “residents began alerting village officials”.
However, on the morning of Thursday, September 8, Illinois Governor Pritzker once again called out the governor of Texas but did not discuss the movement of the migrants in Illinois.
Pritzker said, “What the governor of Texas is doing is disgusting and it needs to stop,”.
“It shouldn’t be that the governor of Texas is taking these people and treating them like cattle, treating them like property, putting them on busses and sending them wherever he wants to send them.”
On September 7, Texas sent another round of 103 more illegal migrants from Texas to Chicago. Texas officials say the policy will continue.
In response, Mayor Lightfoot has called the policy “racist and xenophobic.”
