Justin Trudeau says the border measures “were no longer effective” or “justified”

Earlier today, the Canadian government announced that starting October 1, 2022, the remaining COVID-19 border restrictions — mandatory vaccines, testing and quarantine for international travelers — will end.

In addition, the government also said that on October 1, people traveling by air or train will no longer need to wear masks or undergo health checks.

The use of the infamous ArriveCan app will no longer be mandatory.

It is unclear whether the United States will follow Canada in lifting its COVID-19 border restrictions. The Biden administration still requires foreign travelers to be vaccinated.

However, while Justin Trudeau said the border measures “were no longer effective” or “justified”, he did say that the best way to ensure there would not be a “resurgence of Covid” as winter approached “is to make sure you get up-to-date in your vaccinations with the new formulations coming out that will keep us even safer,”.

He says by people remaining up-to-date on their COVID-19 vaccinations, “it will mean we won’t need to take further steps, hopefully, if everyone gets vaccinated”.

In response to the government removing the border restrictions, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre tweeted, “After constant pressure from Conservatives & people across Canada, Trudeau Liberals finally back down on the disastrous ArriveCAN app, unscientific vaccine mandates & forced mask-wearing.

None of the science changes October 1 but because of you, Trudeau has to.”
