Liberal Minister for Women and Gender Equality refers to the Taliban as “our brothers”

During a press conference on Wednesday, August 25, about the ongoing situation in Afghanistan, Liberal Minister for Women and Gender Equality Maryam Monsef referred to the Taliban as “our brothers”.

In the clip circulating the internet, Liberal Minister for Women and Gender Equality Maryam Monsef if heard saying:

“I want to take this opportunity to speak to our brothers the Taliban. We call on you to ensure the safe and secure passage of any individual in Afghanistan out of the country.”

Maryam Monsef was first elected in 2015 as the Member of Parliament for Peterborough—Kawartha, a federal electoral district in Ontario, Canada.

Minister Monsef’s cabinet profile says she was “the co-founder of the Red Pashmina Campaign, a grassroots initiative she started while at Trent University, which has successfully raised over $150,000 to date to help support women in Afghanistan.”
