Facebook Oversight Board upholds Donald Trump ban, but says Facebook ‘violated its own rules’

On Wednesday, May 5, Facebook’s Oversight Board decided to uphold Donald Trump’s January 7, 2021, ban from the social media platform, as well as Instagram. However, the Oversight Board wrote: “it was not appropriate for Facebook to impose the indeterminate and standardless penalty of indefinite suspension.”

In a recent interview with Reuters, Facebook Chief Operating Officer (COO) Sheryl Sandberg said that there is no plan by Facebook to lift its ban on President Trump on the platform. Sandberg said, “the risk to our democracy was too big that we felt we had to take the unprecedented step of what is an indefinite ban and I’m glad we did.”

In a response to the newly released emails showing that Joe Biden had been introduced to a top executive at a Ukrainian firm Burisma Holdings by his son Hunter Biden, Facebook says they will be “reducing its distribution on our platform” of the story from the New York Post. The emails are now under investigation by the Senate Homeland Security Committee.
