In 2019, the Canadian government released a weather app called “WeatherCan”. New data released by Blacklock’s Reporter shows the app is currently tracking nearly a million Canadians.

The app uses a ‘current location’ function which allows it to provide geographically accurate weather, while apparently also collecting the user’s geolocation data.

In 2019, prior environment minister Catherine McKenna called the app “super cool”. The Canadian government’s Department of Environment also added the app would “keep Canadians safe.”

“Oh yes!! #WeatherCAN app is available for download! Now I can obsess over the super cool radar feature and figure out the likelihood of getting home to snowy Ottawa tonight to see my kids! Check it out!”, McKenna tweeted in February of 2019.

“The number of monthly active users is 628,615 to June 1 and the number of inactive users in the last thirty days is 87,176 giving a total number of devices tracked of 715,791”, the Department of Environment admitted in an inquiry, while adding that all “personal information created, held or collected via this app by the department is protected under the Privacy Act”.

This revelation comes amidst increasing scrutiny into the Trudeau government’s tracking and spying of Canadian citizens.

In December 2021, it was revealed that Trudeau’s Liberal government “secretly tracked 33 million phones during COVID-19 lockdown”.

“The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) clandestinely tracked the devices to assess ‘the public’s responsiveness during lockdown measures’ […] The PHAC bought location and movement data from Canadian telecom giant Telus to ‘understand possible links between the movement of populations within Canada and the spread of COVID-19,’ an agency spokesperson said, according to the paper. The public health organization plans to continue tracking population movement for at least the next five years to control ‘other infectious diseases, chronic disease prevention and mental health,’  the unnamed rep said”, as reported by the New York Post.
